The breed was made to be beside people and <strong>is extremely motivated by praise and food<\/strong>, so it learns quickly and willingly.<\/p>\n<p>The condition is the method. The Cavalier is a sensitive dog \u2014 to a raised voice, a sharp movement, displeasure in your tone it responds by withdrawing, not by defiance. A dog that becomes frightened stops trying, and a dog that stops trying does not learn.<\/p>\n<p>That is why only reward-based work succeeds with this breed. It is not a matter of philosophy but of what produces results.<\/p>\n<h2>Day one<\/h2>\n<p>Nothing is taught on the first day. The aim is for the puppy to settle.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>show it where the water is, where the bed is and where it relieves itself<\/li>\n<li>do not invite guests to see the puppy in the first days<\/li>\n<li>do not carry it around constantly \u2014 let it explore on its own<\/li>\n<li>let it sleep whenever it wants; a puppy sleeps up to twenty hours a day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first night is almost always restless. The moment it turns its head \u2014 praise and a treat. Ten times a day, two seconds each.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The name is never used for scolding.<\/strong> If the name means \u201csomething unpleasant is coming\u201d, the dog stops turning round. This is the commonest mistake and the costliest, because a name is hard to repair afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside this, in the first week the puppy gets used to having its paws, ears and mouth handled \u2014 a few seconds a day, with a treat. That is preparation for nail trimming, tooth brushing and vet examinations years ahead.<\/p>\n<h2>Week two: sit and the first boundaries<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Sedi<\/strong> is the first command because it teaches itself. Hold a treat above the nose and move it slowly back over the head \u2014 the puppy sits down in order to follow it. At that moment the word \u201csit\u201d and the treat.<\/p>\n<p>The word is added <strong>only when the dog performs the movement reliably<\/strong>. Repeating a command to a dog that does not understand it only teaches the dog that the word means nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The same week, boundaries of space are introduced: where the dog may and may not go, whether the sofa is allowed, where it eats. The rule that applies to all of it: <strong>do not allow the puppy anything you would not want in a grown dog.<\/strong> A two-kilo Cavalier in your lap is charming; the same dog at eight kilos jumping on guests is a problem you created yourself.<\/p>\n<h2>Week three: recall and the lead<\/h2>\n<p>Recall starts indoors, from two metres away, with the best treat you have. Never on the street and never for the first time off the lead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A dog that comes when called must never experience anything unpleasant.<\/strong> If you call it and immediately apply flea drops or end the game, next time it comes more slowly.<\/p>\n<p>The harness goes on indoors first, for a minute, with a treat, then comes off. Then for longer, then a lead is added that trails on the floor. Only then the walk outside. <strong>With a Cavalier use a harness, not a collar<\/strong> \u2014 pressure on the neck is not harmless in a small breed.<\/p>\n<h2>Week four: stay and place<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Stay<\/strong> is built one second at a time. The dog sits, you say the word, you wait <em>one<\/em> second and reward. Then two. Anything longer is not training but tiring the dog out.<\/p>\n<p>Three to five short sessions a day give a better result than one long one. Each ends <strong>on a success<\/strong> \u2014 let the last repetition be one the dog certainly knows.<\/p>\n<h2>The mistakes that cost the most<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Scolding after the event.<\/strong> The dog does not connect a puddle from half an hour ago with your tone now. It only learns that you are unpredictable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Repeating the command.<\/strong> \u201cSit, sit, sit, SIT\u201d teaches the dog that the first three mean nothing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Different rules within the family.<\/strong> If one member feeds from the table and another does not, the dog does not learn a rule but to try its luck with everyone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Socialisation started too late.<\/strong> The window in which a puppy adapts to the world most easily closes at around four months.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Too much at once.<\/strong> One new thing a week is enough.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is normal but looks like a problem<\/h2>\n<p>A puppy chews everything, wakes at night, has \u201czoomies\u201d in the evening and forgets what it learned yesterday. All of that is normal and passes.<\/p>\n<p>What is not normal and needs professional help is a puppy that <strong>freezes and will not approach anything new<\/strong> or that panics at everyday sounds. That is not outgrown on its own.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>The first month with a Cavalier goes in order: settling in and the name, then sit and boundaries, then recall and the lead, then stay and place. Sessions last a few minutes and end on a success, and the method is reward only, because this is a sensitive breed that stops trying when the tone turns sharp.
