This is not a breed for someone looking for a dog that leaves no hair around the house.<\/p>\n<p>This article explains how much the breed really sheds, when shedding is heavier, how to reduce the amount of hair in the house and why the Cavalier is not a hypoallergenic breed \u2014 nor is any other.<\/p>\n<h2>How much a Cavalier sheds<\/h2>\n<p>Moderately, but constantly. Compared with breeds that have a dense undercoat, such as the husky or the German shepherd, the amount of shed hair is considerably smaller. Compared with a poodle or a bichon, considerably greater.<\/p>\n<p>The reason is the structure of the coat. <strong>The Cavalier has a single-layered, silky coat without a dense undercoat<\/strong>, so it does not come out in tufts but as individual long hairs. Artificial light and a constant temperature confuse the natural rhythm, so such a dog sheds evenly all year.<\/p>\n<p>In unspayed females there is also heavier shedding a few weeks after the season. This is hormonal and normal.<\/p>\n<h2>How to reduce the amount of hair in the house<\/h2>\n<p>Hair collected by the brush does not end up on the sofa. That is the whole strategy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>More frequent brushing in season.<\/strong> Outside the season two or three times a week, in the transitional months every day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A soft slicker brush<\/strong> removes shed hair better than a comb, but the comb must go over afterwards to check for mats.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brushing outdoors or on the balcony<\/strong> whenever possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A rubber grooming glove<\/strong> over the short hair on the back picks up what the brush misses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A damp cloth<\/strong> over fabrics gathers hair better than a vacuum cleaner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What not to use: <strong>a furminator and undercoat rakes.<\/strong> They are made for breeds with a dense undercoat. On a Cavalier they have nothing to remove, so instead they tear healthy hair and damage the feathering.<\/p>\n<h2>Does diet make a difference<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, and visibly so. A lack of fatty acids produces a dry, brittle coat that falls out more than it should.<\/p>\n<p>In a dog on good food with enough fat the coat is glossier and holds better. Omega-3 supplements can help, but are introduced with a vet, because overdosing happens more easily in a small dog than people think.<\/p>\n<p>A sudden decline in coat quality together with heavier loss is not a grooming matter but a reason for an examination.<\/p>\n<h2>Is the Cavalier hypoallergenic<\/h2>\n<p>It is not. But it is worth knowing that <strong>no dog breed is truly hypoallergenic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the commonest misunderstanding on the subject. Allergy in people is not caused by hair but by proteins found in the dog\u2019s saliva, dander and urine. The hair is only the vehicle \u2014 it carries those proteins around the flat.<\/p>\n<p>That is why breeds advertised as hypoallergenic, such as the poodle, in fact merely <strong>spread fewer allergens<\/strong>, because their hair does not fall out but stays in the coat until clipping. The allergen is still there.<\/p>\n<p>The Cavalier, with its long, constantly shedding coat, is <strong>a poorer choice for someone allergic to dogs.<\/strong> That should be said openly, before the purchase and not after.<\/p>\n<h2>If there is an allergy in the household<\/h2>\n<p>The decision about a dog in such a household is made with a doctor, not on the basis of an article on the internet. What can be said in general:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an allergy test with an allergist gives a clearer picture than guesswork<\/li>\n<li>spend a longer stretch of time with an adult dog of the breed before deciding<\/li>\n<li>a reaction to one dog need not mean the same reaction to another, but that is a weak basis for a decision<\/li>\n<li>a dog-free bedroom and an air purifier reduce exposure but do not remove it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A serious breeder will talk you out of it rather than sell a dog into a home where someone has a marked allergy. A dog returned after six months is a worse outcome for everyone.<\/p>\n<h2>When hair loss is not normal<\/h2>\n<p>Seasonal shedding is even over the whole body and the skin underneath is healthy. There is reason to see a vet if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the hair falls out in <strong>round bald patches<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>the skin underneath is red, flaky or crusted<\/li>\n<li>the dog scratches or licks one spot persistently<\/li>\n<li>the coat has lost its shine and breaks<\/li>\n<li>the loss is sudden and heavy outside the season<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Behind this most often lie parasites, a fungal infection, an allergy or a hormonal disorder. All four are treatable, but none resolves on its own.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>The Cavalier sheds moderately but all year round, more heavily in spring and autumn, and the amount of hair in the house depends above all on how regularly it is brushed. The breed is not hypoallergenic and is not a good choice for someone allergic to dogs \u2014 and the same applies to every other breed advertised that way, because the allergen is not the hair but the protein it carries.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: this text is for information only.
