The Cavalier is neither clipped nor trimmed into shape \u2014 the breed standard expressly forbids it \u2014 so all the work that poodle and shih tzu owners have simply does not arise.<\/p>\n\n<p>What is actually done is brushing, and only in the places where mats really form: behind the ears, under the front legs, on the hind legs and around the tail. The rest of the body rarely causes trouble.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Bathing<\/h2>\n\n<p>Less often than people think. Bathing too frequently dries out the skin and spoils the natural texture of the coat.<\/p>\n\n<p>The most important rule with this breed is not how often, but <strong>that the ears are dried thoroughly after every bath<\/strong>. Moisture trapped under the drooping ear flap is the most common cause of ear infection.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Training and upbringing<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Cavalier learns easily because it wants to please, but it also has one trait that surprises owners: <strong>it takes a harsh tone extremely badly.<\/strong> A dog that gets told off does not become more obedient, it becomes withdrawn.<\/p>\n\n<p>With this breed only reward-based work succeeds. Short sessions of five minutes, several times a day. That calculation is rarely done in advance, and it should be.<\/p>\n\n<p>The monthly outlay includes food, parasite protection, grooming, and the thing most often forgotten \u2014 <strong>the annual cardiac check, which in this breed is a requirement and not a matter of choice<\/strong>. On top of that, a reserve for the unexpected, because the breed has known health risks.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Shedding and allergies<\/h2>\n\n<p>The answer people do not like to hear: <strong>the Cavalier sheds, and it is not a hypoallergenic breed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>It sheds moderately all year round, with two heavier spells in the transitional seasons. If someone in the household is allergic to dogs, this breed is not the answer \u2014 and it is better to know that before buying than after.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Travel<\/h2>\n\n<p>Its size makes the breed convenient to travel with. The rhythm changes; the need for company does not.<\/p>\n\n<p>Walks become shorter and more frequent, check-ups more frequent, and one habit becomes more important than all the rest \u2014 watching the breathing during sleep, because that is the earliest sign that the heart is giving way.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The most common mistakes<\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Overfeeding.<\/strong> The Cavalier always looks hungry and it is hard to resist. Excess weight in a breed with a heart risk is not harmless.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A collar instead of a harness.<\/strong> A collar presses on the neck when the dog pulls, which is not desirable in a breed prone to neck problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Skipping the drying of the ears.<\/strong> The most common cause of infection, and the easiest one to avoid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A harsh tone in training.<\/strong> With this breed it is counterproductive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Long spells alone.<\/strong> The biggest problem, and the least visible one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Cavalier does not ask for much time, but it does ask for regularity and presence.
