That same structure means the eye is less protected from injury, drying and dust than in breeds with a more deeply set eye.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the breed carries several inherited conditions passed from parents to offspring. That is why an eye examination by a specialist is among the tests a responsible breeder does before mating.<\/p>\n<h2>Dry eye<\/h2>\n<p>This is the most common eye problem in Cavaliers. The tear gland produces too few tears, so the cornea stays dry and irritated.<\/p>\n<p>It is recognised by the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a thick, sticky, yellowish discharge collecting in the corner of the eye<\/li>\n<li>the eye looks dull instead of shiny<\/li>\n<li>the dog squints and rubs the eye with a paw or against furniture<\/li>\n<li>redness that does not go away<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Dry eye is treated for life, with drops given every day, and on regular treatment the dog sees perfectly normally.<\/strong> Unrecognised and untreated, it leads to scarring of the cornea and permanent loss of sight, so early recognition is decisive here.<\/p>\n<h2>Cataract<\/h2>\n<p>A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. In Cavaliers there is an inherited form that appears early, as well as the usual age-related form.<\/p>\n<p>It appears as a grey or bluish clouding deep in the eye. It progresses slowly and can lead to blindness, but it is treated surgically with good results.<\/p>\n<p>With older dogs there is one more thing worth knowing. A slight bluish haze in a dog over eight is usually not a cataract but the ordinary change of the lens that comes with age and does not take away sight. The difference is established by an examination, not by the look of the eye.<\/p>\n<h2>Distichiasis<\/h2>\n<p>These are eyelashes growing in the wrong place, out of the edge of the eyelid, which scrape the cornea with every blink.<\/p>\n<p>It is recognised by constant watering, squinting and redness of one eye. In mild cases nothing is done; in more pronounced ones the hairs are removed by a procedure.<\/p>\n<h2>Corneal ulcers<\/h2>\n<p>An ulcer is damage to the surface of the eye. In Cavaliers it arises either as a consequence of dry eye or from injury, because a prominent eye easily catches a branch or a toy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is the only eye condition where you go to the vet the same day.<\/strong> The signs are clear: the dog suddenly holds the eye shut, waters heavily, avoids light and will not let you near its head.<\/p>\n<p>An ulcer heals quickly and well when treatment starts immediately, but left for a few days it can endanger the eye.<\/p>\n<h2>Retinal dysplasia<\/h2>\n<p>An inherited irregularity in the development of the retina. In its mild form the dog has small blind spots it does not notice at all in daily life; in its severe form the retina detaches and sight is lost.<\/p>\n<p>It cannot be recognised from the look of the eye; only an examination by a specialist detects it. That is why it is part of the pre-mating examination.<\/p>\n<h2>An eye examination by a specialist<\/h2>\n<p>The examination is carried out by a veterinary ophthalmologist, without anaesthesia, and takes only a short time. For Cavaliers it is recommended once a year.<\/p>\n<p>The report has limited validity, usually one year, because eye conditions can appear later in life. That is why the examination is repeated rather than done once and for all.<\/p>\n<p>For a dog intended for breeding, the eye examination report belongs to the required documentation, alongside the cardiac report and the genetic tests.<\/p>\n<h2>Everyday care<\/h2>\n<p>A few simple habits reduce the number of problems:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>wipe the corners of the eyes with a soft, damp gauze, a fresh one for each eye<\/li>\n<li>trim the hair around the eyes so that it does not poke or collect dirt<\/li>\n<li>avoid car rides with the head out of an open window<\/li>\n<li>do not use drops meant for human eyes without a vet's advice<\/li>\n<li>show any discharge lasting more than two days to the vet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When it is urgent<\/h2>\n<p>Go to the vet straight away if you notice any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a suddenly closed eye and heavy watering<\/li>\n<li>a visible injury or scratch on the eye<\/li>\n<li>a clouding that appeared overnight<\/li>\n<li>an eye that looks bloodshot or bulging<\/li>\n<li>the dog suddenly starts bumping into furniture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Most eye problems in Cavaliers resolve well when they are spotted in time. Dry eye, the most common of them, takes away neither sight nor quality of life when daily drops are given. What is usually missed is not a severe condition but an early one: a thick discharge and a dull-looking eye are easily put down to dirt, yet they are the first sign.
