The paper that means something is a specialist's report, with a date, the doctor's name and a signature.<\/p>\n<p>This article sets out which examinations the parents of a Cavalier should have before mating, at what age, and how to recognise a report that really proves something.<\/p>\n<h2>Why a pedigree is not proof of health<\/h2>\n<p>A pedigree is a family tree. It confirms that the puppy is purebred and that its ancestors are entered in the studbook, but it contains not a single piece of information about the heart, spinal cord or eyes of the parents.<\/p>\n<p>A breeder who answers a question about health by showing you a pedigree has not, in fact, answered the question. In Cavaliers this matters especially, because the two most serious diseases of the breed are inherited and both are found only by a dedicated examination.<\/p>\n<h2>The cardiac examination<\/h2>\n<p>This is the most important examination in this breed and the only one that is neither expensive nor complicated.<\/p>\n<p>The examination is done by a veterinary cardiologist. It involves listening to the heart with a stethoscope and, if needed, an ultrasound. The aim is to establish that the dog has no heart murmur.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With this examination the age matters just as much as the result itself.<\/strong> A one-year-old dog almost certainly has no murmur yet, so a report from that age proves nothing. That is why the internationally accepted protocol requires:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>both parents at least two and a half years old at the time of mating<\/li>\n<li>both parents examined and free of heart murmur<\/li>\n<li>and their own parents, that is the puppy's grandparents, examined at the age of five or older and likewise free of murmur<\/li>\n<li>a report no more than one year old at the time of mating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The last point is the one most often overlooked. The heart changes, so a report from three years ago says nothing about the dog's condition today.<\/p>\n<h2>MRI screening<\/h2>\n<p>The second serious inherited problem of the breed is syringomyelia, a condition in which fluid-filled cavities form within the spinal cord. It cannot be heard or felt, only imaged.<\/p>\n<p>MRI screening covers the head and the neck part of the spine and is done under anaesthesia. The result is graded separately for the shape of the skull and for the cavities, on a scale from 0 to 2.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendations of the specialist programmes are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the minimum age for scanning is twelve months<\/li>\n<li>a result is worth far more if the dog is scanned at three years or later<\/li>\n<li>the greatest value lies in a scan of a dog older than five years<\/li>\n<li>at least one parent in the pair should be free of syringomyelia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This examination is expensive and requires anaesthesia, so not everyone does it. That is exactly why asking about it immediately shows how seriously a breeder takes the breed.<\/p>\n<h2>The eye examination<\/h2>\n<p>Cavaliers are prone to several inherited eye problems, among them cataract, distichiasis and retinal degeneration.<\/p>\n<p>The examination is carried out by a veterinary ophthalmologist, without anaesthesia, and takes only a short time. The report has limited validity, usually one year, because eye conditions can appear later too. That is why the examination is repeated rather than done once for the dog's whole life.<\/p>\n<h2>Genetic tests<\/h2>\n<p>For Cavaliers there are several DNA tests, done from a cheek swab or a blood sample. The two inherited conditions most often tested for are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Curly coat and dry eye syndrome<\/strong>, known by the abbreviation CC or DE.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Episodic falling syndrome<\/strong>, formerly called falling Cavalier syndrome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unlike the heart and the spinal cord, a genetic test is done once in a lifetime and the result does not change. A dog can be clear, a carrier or affected. A carrier may be used in breeding, but only paired with a dog that is clear.<\/p>\n<h2>Patella and hips<\/h2>\n<p>Slipping kneecaps are a common problem in all small breeds, Cavaliers included. The examination is simple, done by hand, and graded from 0 to 4.<\/p>\n<p>A hip examination is not obligatory in this breed to the same extent as in large breeds, but conscientious breeders do it anyway.<\/p>\n<h2>How to recognise a report that means something<\/h2>\n<p>A report that carries weight looks like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>it is on paper, not spoken<\/li>\n<li>it carries the dog's name and microchip number, so it can be tied to a specific dog<\/li>\n<li>it has the date of the examination and the dog's age at that moment<\/li>\n<li>it has the name, signature and stamp of the doctor who performed the examination<\/li>\n<li>it states what was specifically found, not just the word \u201cnormal\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If the microchip number or the date is missing, the report cannot be tied either to the dog or to a point in time and proves practically nothing.<\/strong> A photo of the report sent by message is perfectly fine; what matters is that all the details listed above are visible.<\/p>\n<h2>What to ask for before buying<\/h2>\n<p>Before you leave a deposit, it is reasonable to ask for the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a cardiac report for both parents, no more than a year old<\/li>\n<li>an MRI report for at least one parent<\/li>\n<li>an eye examination report for both parents<\/li>\n<li>the results of the genetic tests<\/li>\n<li>the age of the parents at the time of mating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A breeder who has all of that ready will not be in the least offended by the question. On the contrary, it is a conversation such a breeder enjoys, because they have invested both time and money in those examinations.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Health tests do not guarantee that a puppy will never fall ill. What they do guarantee is that the parents were chosen for health rather than for looks and price, and that the risk was not left to chance.
